You Tube day after Tuesdays!!!! I hear Voices....

If you haven't had the chance to the Voices video you are missing out. In my opinion, and quite a few othersm this is one of the best videos this year. I know it is a hard one to find, but if you can it will be well worth it. This is the part of Joe Cox. He is the one responsible for the video. You can catch him pretty much everywhere from
www.defgrip.com to the newest DIG magazine. Peep the video and enjoy. If you can cop one of these vids, do it.

A little ditty...

Weekend like the one we are currently living become the weekends that can bring a smile back to our face fro the rest of our lives. They all start the same with a Friday, but the end is what makes them special. The weekend doesn't end till Monday. LONG WEEKEND!!! We all rush to get the crew together, we all jump in the car or on the bus or in anything we can get the hell out of dodge with. We pick a place and we grab the bikes. Trips with the crew are always so much fun and always bring so many memories. So get out there and make some. Here is a little something I found that talks about that same spirit.

Chaulk me up...

...for the
Summer Of Pain.
Well, it looks like I may have just joined the posse. Last week my heel was hurting just a little bit when I rode. Nothing bad at all, and most of the time I didn't even notice it. After riding every night for 4 days or so it started to get worse, and now it's full on swelled up, throbbing pain status!
From what I've read on the internet it may be "PLANTAR FASCIITIS" which is where you get some tears in the tissue that connects to your heel bone. Apparently this can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months to properly heal. Not psyched. Oh yeah, and I don't get health insurance for another 2 months. Bummer.
So anyway, enough of my whining for today. Got some news? Send it in.

*** Commission To Study Biker-Skater Mix ***
Medford, Oregon -- 05/18/2006
After hearing stories that freestyle bicyclists have nowhere to go but the streets — and getting an earful about hostility
between bike riders and skateboarders — the Medford Parks and Recreation Commission said it would hold a study session
this summer to explore whether bicyclists should be allowed at the Bear Creek skate park.
After an hour of public hearing Tuesday, the commission moved to hold a study session "with less emotion and more
facts" by August to examine all options — including mixed use, a continued bike ban or creation of a bike park, said
commissioner Colleen McCaffrey.
"We are not going to take this lightly," she said.
The unusually large crowd of about 40, with skaters segregating themselves in back rows, split on the issue
of whether bikers and skaters can get along in the same park.
"If they all ride together — with no time management alternating schedules of use, then the guys will work it
out, just like they have in Ashland, Talent and White City, where bikers and skaters are together," said
Nathan Bailey, who operates a Campus Life skate park in Eagle Point.
Critics of mixed use charge that faster, heavier bikes collide with skaters, but Bailey said that rarely happens
at his park. The hostilities between skaters and bicyclists in Medford, he added, "are created by saying you can't
do this or that, you can't be here. White City doesn't have that problem."
Skaters, represented by Rita Allred, co-owner of Jack's Board Shop, urged commissioners to avoid mixed use,
adding, "It was designed as a skateboard park. Why change the rules to fit someone else who needs to bike
there? If they want a park, they should get together and build one." Skaters applauded loudly.
Though banned from the Bear Creek skate park, bike riders come anyway, and cause damage to cement edges,
said her daughter, Patricia Allred.
Bailey denied this, inviting commissioners to inspect his low-end plywood ramps and half-pipes, used by skaters
and bike riders for almost two years and "they're not even touched."
Bicyclist John Steinberg of Talent agreed, saying that the Talent park was built with cheaper materials than Medford's,
yet is "not in bad shape." In any case, he added, bikers and skaters, if not segregated, "get along without problems" and
chip in money and labor toward repairs.
Richard Hawkins of Medford, a bicyclist who carried a skateboard, urged commissioners to stop "dividing the park
up," with police "harassing" kids — kicking out bikers and ticketing skaters for not having helmets.
"It's getting pretty crazy. We need to relieve the pressure. It's pitting people against each other. The fence is not good.
It says 'no' to bikers," said Hawkins, painting a contrasting picture of camaraderie at mixed use parks. "Kids thrive off
competition, seeing someone else do a 360 degree turn in the air. We need an open township, not a fortress that
divides people."
The meeting was dotted with stories of hostility, rudeness and misunderstandings between the two groups.
"If you allow bikers in, there will be drama and violence."
It happens every time bikers come in. They have no respect and that's why people get angry," said skater Blaine Castell
of Medford. "They should build their own park." Skater Mike Metcalf of Medford said when skaters cleaned the park after
a competition, bikers threw trash and rocks all over it, sprayed graffiti and cut fences.
Sims Cycle owner Chris Haynes told commissioners that expensive resources like the skate park should be shared,
thus maximizing their value and minimizing costs.

My theory...
I have a theory behind the summer of pain. Lets take a look back. The first summer of pain was I believe 2 summers ago. The list of injuries was massive and it never seemed like it would stop. Last summer was not that bad and this summer is shaping up to be another painful one.
My theory:
The winter and spring leading up to the summer, 2 summers ago, were not good by any means. This lead to months on end of no real riding. Maybe a session every now and again at a jib spot, but nothing that was a full bore high speed shred fest. Bring on the summer, the weather clears up, the riders go crazy. We get so excited to be able to ride at will anywhere, anytime. We don't want to waste that time so we try a little harder, and we fall a little harder. In other words, we get broke off.
It is kind of like Woodward. On the first day campers are not allowed to ride, this is purely for their safety. The directors don't want the kids in a moment of excitement to kill themselves.
Last winter I remember having a sunburn in what seemed like February. It was such a mild winter, we were all able to ride a lot almost all the time. If there was bad weather, it only lasted for a few days. This lead to the summer and we had already been riding a lot so we weren't as excited. We were probably a little more bummed, because we were used to the sunny mild days, not the sunny hot a hell days.
Look back to this winter, it rained a lot, people had to drive a lot, and they had to ride indoors a lot. This last week or so the weather has been really nice, a full tease of the summer that is about to spring up in full bloom. People are getting hyped and are killing themselves. My only advice is to take it easy and just ease into the summer. Look at it like this, you can ride 150% now and sit the summer out or you can ride at say 80% now and enjoy your whole summer.

Just a quick one....
It's funny every time I say, no news, just a quick one or anything along those lines, the post always ends up being really long. I am really grabbing at nothing today, since I do not have really anything to write about.
I hear that it was one hella hot day up north. It's funny to me how we are up there. It can be raining for 5 months strait and we complain. The sun can come out and it gets "too warm" and we complain. I am guessing the further north you go the more this is true. I guess that is why grunge had it's Seattle home base. I think all of that angst was started from a really long fall/winter/spring. Everyone was forced to wear flannels and sweaters to stay warm. Performing in those articles of clothing often lead to actually warming up quite a bit, you know how hot it can get in a concert hall much less a garage. I think this then lead to the pulling and tearing at the clothing to make themselves comfy. Realizing they had shredded and torn the only clothes they had, they were forced to continue to wear them.
Over time, since the rainy days do last for ever, heads from LA and New York who would pass through town on their way to Vancouver to go skiing would stop off at the crazy new coffee shop phenomena and see the people and most of the time performers. I heat that Nirvana was discovered when Kurt, who often rocked out in the high school party scene, sat in front of a
Starbucks* with his acoustic playing to try and afford a hot chocolate and one of those little biscotti bread things. A producer from LA saw this performance and his original dress and just saw dollar $ign$. He talked to Kurt, gave him a contract on a napkin, just a temporary hold on the talent until he could get back from skiing, then flew him down to LA and signed the man.
Pretty crazy thing that Northwest weather is. Next time on just a quick one: I like Big Butts and I cannot fib....
*Starbucks was not always that, it started out called Joe's Coffee Joint. It was originally a bodega that started serving customers to it's "high" customers. The coffee grew in popularity quickly spreading to the non-smoking crowds of Seattle. Joe thought it would be smart to redesign the store and change the name to draw in wealthier clientele. He thought, "What do people what to be? I got it Movie Stars!" He also wanted to make some money so the name StarBucks was born. The funny little Icon that is now know to the brand also did start out as a grunge teen full of angst with both middle fingers up proclaiming fuck the system. That too was later changed.

TGIF....
Well it was a long work day leading to something I have been anticipating for the last few weeks. Vince Krusher was going to meet up with Fudger to shoot a sequence 360ing the big pyramid at Civic. This Pyramid is big enough that I have repeatedly seen person after person launch themselves superman to death landing trying to just clear it strait.
A few weeks ago Vince gave it a go but he couldn't go fast enough. It is insane watching someone pedal as fast as they possibly can and then cranking a big 360. This pyramid is pure bunnyhop too. The cobble stones and the mellow bank really don't work to throw you in the air, it all has to be done with the hop. That first day Vince came close, but it didn't pan out.
So here we are, Friday 6:30pm and the caeras are firing. Vince has a bigger gearing this time, so speed should not be a problem. On one attempt he was mere inches from being done with this stunt. Next thing we here that damn loud cherp noise that a police car makes. I turn around to see a cop signaling out his window for us to leave. We decide to stick around and see if Vince can do this.
Next thing we know the cap is driving up the sidewalk with his lights on. Most people headed off the opposite way and headed home. the other half of s casually went up to the cop car and this dude was pissed. He cussing, fuck this, fuck that, I really wasn't listening. He told us that he didn't apprecate us leaning on the fallen officer memorial, we were actually gathered around the thing ans some of us were leaning on the guard rail, but we weren't disgracing the thing as he so elequently said we were doing. Dude was a dick, he tried to diss us for being old and riding bikes, he had no real argument. AP got called out to pull up his pants with the threat of an indecent exposure ticket. We just left.
So Vince didn't get to clean the 3, i guess we will have to go back again another day.

a kicking good time!
So the homies have been rolling pretty hard on the new shoe tip as of late. I had to make a trip out to the
ARMORY today to get some merch for the homies.
Happened to pick up a hot new pair of purple and grey Nike "Team Edition" SB's today while out picking up a fresh pair of "Cinco de Mayo" P-Rods for Ryan S. Ken was along for the ride and decided to help himself to some "True To Your School" SB high tops in a nice blue and white colorway. Even picked up the new enjoi dvd for Shad.
After the shoe shopping had been done and the kicks had been laced the posse headed over to Oregon City for an evening session. Myself, Travis G, Forrest B, Bogues, Devin H, Ryan S, Boyd Inc., Ken M, and Mike L were all in affect and there was even a Gangsta Jay sighting too! All the bikes being around ran most of the skateboarders off in a hurry so we had the park for the sesh. Ryan has boost, Devin is still on his game all while being an wild Alaskan, and Mike will click a 270'd turndown at will!
Overall, quite a successful day. No complaints here...-slo

*** Kelso Will Try To Sell Skate Park Idea ***
Kelso, Washington -- 05/04/2006
When it comes to choosing a site for a skateboard park, Kelso city officials have a tough sell on their hands.
Next week, they hope to convince Burcham Street residents it won't be madness on wheels if the city builds a 10,000- square-foot concrete skateboard bowl in their neighborhood.
"We don't intend to just ram it down their throats. We hope they come open-minded," said Community Development Director Kent Anderson.
On May 11, the city is sponsoring a skateboard park forum at 1405 Burcham St., East Hills Alliance Church, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. City leaders, local skaters, skateboard park designers and neighbors of Longview's skateboard park on Washington Way will talk about the project, answer questions, and hopefully, alleviate Burcham Street residents' concerns about traffic, crime, drugs and noise, Anderson said.
Councilman David Futcher said he hopes once the city conveys accurate information to opponents of the park, "they'll understand it's not a project that'll affect the quality of life up there."
But changing their minds probably won't be easy.
In September 2004, after Burcham Street residents learned a skate park might be built 500 feet from the nearest house at Rotary Park, they circulated a petition and gathered signatures from at least 63 park opponents.
In November 2005, the city invited local skateboarders to review computer-generated drawings a Seattle skate park design company drew for Kelso's park. Fred Hooper, who lives close to Rotary Park and led the petition drive, attended the meeting and said if the city settled on Rotary Park, "You bet I'd be fighting it tooth and claw." Officials say Rotary Park, a grassy triangle with picnic tables, bathrooms and a playground off of Minor Road next to Interstate 5, is the best spot in the city for a skate park -- and they've planned accordingly since the project was hatched in late summer 2004.
Grindline, a Seattle-based skate park company, designed Kelso's skate park specifically to fit the slope of Rotary Park.
Also, the city called in a geotechnical engineer a year ago to survey the property in response to neighbors' allegations that the land was too swampy to bear the load of a concrete skate park. (It isn't).
And although city officials have said Tam O'Shanter Park might be an alternative, Councilman David Futcher, also a Kelso Rotarian, said there's not enough room for the concrete bowl. A skate park at Tam O' would be limited to putting ramps on basketball courts, he said.
Another drawback for Tam O' is its relative seclusion compared to the highly visible, Futcher said Monday.
"Nobody wants to do illegal activities when you have 10,000 cars coming past you on the Interstate," he said.
Once the city announces a site, it may begin applying for grants and funding. Kelso Rotary Club is donating $45,000 toward the project, which may cost up to $200,000.

30 Days and counting.
As you may have noticed I have been a little M.I.A. lately. Well, that's because I am in the midst of working approximatly 30 days straight.
People at The Mac Store (where I also work) are getting shifted around and promoted, resulting in myself getting a raise and being moved into some more work. I'm not complaining too much though because now I will work 30 hours per week there allowing me to get Health Insurance. Sweet!
Since we are a few folks short, and a few more on vacations I am working 5 days a week at The Mac Store as well as my regular 2 days a week at Goods. AND, Shad will be leaving for 2 weeks to film for Props at the end of the month meaning I will be spending every free moment I'm not at The Mac Store, at Goods covering for him.
So, yeah there's what's up with me as of late. Hopefully things will chill out next month, but at least for the time being I will be making mad cash to buy more shoes with! Yessss!
