RIP Kevin Duckworth...

I moved to Oregon from Texas in August of 88. I had only slightly followed sports and even then it was mostly football and the Cowboys. Within a few months of my move I would be introduced by friends to my cities team, the Portland Trailblazers. Names like Drexler, Uncle Cliffy, Williams, Porter and Duckworth.

Of course the first 4 guys were constantly mentioned during cames of pick up ball, but Kevin Duckworth was a prominent figure to me. See, Kevin liked to fish just like me and all my friends. We would run home on Sundays to make sure to catch the fishing show or an outdoor segment with Grant McOmie on the news and odds were, you would see Duckworth at some point. It also seemed like a lot of my friends parents were friends with Kevin and his family and why not he was a local to my area. Kevin was just a normal guy like I hoped to be one day. Famous and amazing basketball player, yes. Stand up guy and roll model for any one of any age, without a doubt.

Kevin Passed away yesterday and I just heard the news. The world, even if it's just my small home town, has lost another great person. Thanks for all the great memories on the court but even more, off the court. You will be missed Duck. Thank you.-ben

Shola is a type of high-altitude evergreen forest found in a very specific region of the world. Each Shola forest is separated by rolling hills and grasslands. What does this have to do with BMX? Take five very unique riders, all experts of their craft. Each with a different perspective of how to use a bicycle and only separated by their approach to the terrain. Each one a Shola.

Bruce Crisman and his band of misfit riders are working on another video. From the looks of the second trailer above, it will be another one to watch and surely be talked about. Darin Read, Chester Blacksmith, Davey Watson, Jack Maddock and Bruce Crisman are the line up and I can't see one thing wrong with that. Check out the trailer, then visit the site. Spread the word.

On Saturday night June 28th I headed into LA with Greyboy and Giant to go to the Freestylin' Book Launch Party at Brooklyn Projects. Grey was supposed to DJ and Giant and myself were hoping to score a very special something. NO, not that, get your mind out of the gutters.

The item we were after was none other than the first issue of Freestylin' Magazine that had been printed in almost 20 years. I guess this was also supposed to be a launch for some really amazing Nike SB sneakers. Okay, they weren't that amazing. Fast forward to home.

Well I have to first thank Eric Anthony for making sure Lewman hooked me and Giant up with the "golden ticket" so we could get our books. It was pretty funny. I am quite sure a bunch of the dumbass people at the "event" thought they were getting the dope, fresh, hot, limited, rare, quick rape, Nike SB's for free. I bet they will be bummed when they get home and figure out it is just some BMX Book.

Well this thing is not just some BMX book to me. I have been up all night, and now it is day looking at the book. Is is so fucking amazing. Lewman, Jenkins, and Spike did a great job with this thing. It is great to see that there are still some people out there that can keep the feeling alive in a reproduction of a product.

All in all, this thing is SICK.-ben

Oh yeah. You want to know the best part about this whole book project. I don't think you can actually get a copy unless you can some how buy the shoes. Dude that is lame and I hope it is not for real.

Damn, it looks like it is shaping up to be an amazing summer in the Northwest. There is no shortage of Jams to make travel plans for. Make sure to get a large van with good gas mileage and make sure everyone pitches in on that fuel, it can be a real killer! I really wish I was back to make to some of these.-ben

It seems we are living in a Decade of Death? Well either that or there is going to be a Raddest Decade Trick Contest!!! Let's hope it is the latter. Either way the guys down south are getting a Jam together and you better make it out since they come and rep hard to every event way North from them. If this show is half as good as the one that was down here in Long Beach, it should be a blast. It seems there is a Old School Bike Show along with Racing activities. If that isn't sick, then the fact that you get to visit Bend should be rad enough. Make it if you can.
